Jim DeWitt:  U.S. Navy, 1963-1965)  served on aircraft carrier Midway

 

Jim Dewitt Entered the service September 6, 1960,  I was 17 years old when I joined navy reserve. David Adams was our commander, (Mr. Adams was a teacher in the Augusta School System).

 

When I began my active duty 15 April 1965, I reported to Treasurer Island San Francisco California.

 

On May 14, 1965, I reported on board the USS Midway (CVA-41). This ship, an aircraft carrier was already on a Westpac cruise, which was just off coast of Vietnam. On April 26 1966,

 

I reported on board the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) an aircraft carrier which took me to another Westpac cruise.

 

On September 8, 1966,  I received my honorable discharged. Our Government is so fast it took them 45 years to give me medals & ribbons. These honors were a Defense Service Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, A National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Navy, Army Service Pistol Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color w/Palm).
